Missed Opportunity: Roof Closure Leaves Residents Cold

On November 16th, Tom Hickey announced the abrupt closure of the rooftop at 1:31 pm.

The roof is now closed for the season, as we welcome in Fall and winter.

The rooftop closure, while undoubtedly well-intentioned, missed the mark in terms of timing and consideration for residents’ desires.

The timing of this closure raised eyebrows, especially considering the high temperature on November 16th was a pleasant 64 degrees, and November 17th promised an even milder 66 degrees.

The absence of advanced notice left residents grappling with the sudden loss of access to a space that has become a cherished retreat. Many residents depend on the rooftop as a place to unwind, socialize, and enjoy the changing seasons. This decision, impacting the residents’ quality of life, warranted greater consideration and transparency.

The crux of the issue lies in the failure to consult the weather forecast before making the decision to close the rooftop for the season. Decisions should be based on the weather conditions rather than adhering to a predetermined calendar. With temperatures still conducive to outdoor activities, the closure seemed premature, marking a missed opportunity to optimize residents’ enjoyment of communal spaces.

The closure, seemingly driven by the need to “winterize” the rooftop, raises questions about the balance between staff convenience and residents’ well-being. Shouldn’t decisions regarding communal spaces prioritize the enjoyment and comfort of residents over building tasks?

The closure of the rooftop without considering the weather forecast highlights a missed opportunity for collaboration between management and residents. A more inclusive decision-making process, one that incorporates resident input and considers the external factors influencing daily life, could have resulted in a more informed and agreeable resolution.

As we reflect on this unexpected closure, let us collectively advocate for a more resident-centric approach to decisions affecting our community spaces. By fostering open communication and collaboration, we can ensure that future decisions align with the best interests and preferences of the diverse community that calls The Eastmore home.
